Because we continually produce the kind of thing we are itching to make at that particular time and not what our fans expect of us. I mean I love our fans, but to ONLY do what they ask of you does not make any product better. You have to do the unexpected.
I saw a group of internet video makers get a really big hit video a while back. Months later I check their account, and they made sequels to that video 8 weeks in a row, with each one getting half the hits of the previous one. Then they followed those up with a video where they asked the audience what they should do next. That is the mistake right there. It’s not your audience’s job to figure this stuff out. You will go crazy and make horrible content trying to cater to their every whim. You may find success for a while, but good luck ever really feeling good about stuff on a long term period. You can only ignore the truth so long. Make stuff you want to see and things will fall into place one way or another.
